Alan is a Professor of Organic Chemistry and Head of Chemistry at Imperial College London. Throughout a distinguished academic career of over 25 years his specialism has been synthetic organic chemistry, especially the synthesis of biologically active compounds and new methods for drug discovery.

His many awards include the Royal Society of Chemistry Meldola Medal and Prize (1995); a GlaxoWellcome Award for Innovative Organic Chemistry (1996); a Pfizer Academic Award (1999); an AstraZeneca Research Award (1999); the Novartis Young Investigator Award (1999); a Bristol-Myers Squibb Young Investigator Award (2000-2003); and the Royal Society of Chemistry Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize (2003). Alan advises on various aspects of Small Pharma’s scientific and development strategies.
